Time Goes Slow When You're Having Fun

By now most, if not all kids, are back in school doing their activities and homework. My boy doesn't like doing homework much, maybe something is wrong with him, shouldn't he like it? Just playing. I usually have work to do in the evening and I call it my "homework," and we do it together. Another school year is upon us. I'm just in the beginning stages of my angel's school career so I can't imagine what the parents of the big kids are thinking, soon I'll understand I'm sure. Well not soon, there's still a long time to go before he is one of the bigger kids. He has multiplied in size than say four years ago however. When I look at him now I see a long, stretched out person versus a little munchkin in diapers, it surprises me how all of that time has passed.

Kids grow up so fast is what a lot of moms and dads tell me. I'm at a place right now where I don't think that's necessarily true. I'm with my boy day in and day out and when we're together, life doesn't seem to be moving at any particularly accelerated pace. Don't get me wrong, it's not that I'm not having fun - because we all know the saying, "time flies when you're having fun." Time can go slow when you're having fun too. When my big boy and I are on the floor together playing (I mean building, he's corrected me on this) lego, time goes very slow, as I'm not that into lego building. He's very much into it, so I pretend to be as well, to the best of my acting ability. My fun comes from watching him build.

The lego scenario has been happening daily, for many years now. At the park or the pool, where we've been spending a good portion of our lives lately, I do just that, park myself, as that is what he would rather me do and time goes slow then too, and is most welcomed. On the other end of the spectrum, while working on the job and not necessarily having a blast, time goes really fast, with sometimes not even enough hours in the day. The fast times can fly right on by, I would much rather savor the slow ones. There are many more years ahead of this stage of life and I'm going to do everything I can to make sure they stay and go . . . s l o w l y.
