Texas Wants To Cure Gays

A few days ago, in an effort to turn gay people straight, Texas Republican officials adopted a party platform in support of "reparative therapy" or "conversion therapy," as it's called in the scientific community. The San Antonio Express-News/Houston Chronicle, obtained the platform draft and here's a piece of what it says:

"Homosexuality must not be presented as an acceptable alternate lifestyle, in public policy, nor should family be redefined to include homosexual couples. We believe there should be no granting of special legal entitlements or creation of special status for homosexual behavior, regardless of state of origin."

The platform offers patients a chance to "escape from the homosexual lifestyle." Not all Republicans in Texas are in support it should be noted, the Log Cabin Republicans and the Metroplex Republicans do not. "Conversion therapy" has been discredited by nearly everyone in the medical community. The American Psychological Association published a report showing evidence that attempts to change sexual orientation is not effective and urge practitioners not to use it. The following organizations have stated it is inoperative: the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Medical Association, the American Psychiatric Association, the World Health Organization and the National Association of Social Workers

Cathy Adams, President of the Texas Eagle Forum, the group leading the platform, believes it's a "freedom issue." California and New Jersey have banned "conversion therapy" for minors and Washington, New York, Florida, Massachusetts, Ohio and Pennsylvania have bills on the table to do the same. Research has shown it is psychologically damaging for minors when they are forced into it. Newsweek reported a study conducted by San Francisco State University, which showed young patients in the therapy were "eight times more likely than their gay peers to commit suicide." America has always been a melting pot of cultures, races, ethnicities and sexual orientations, that is what makes it great. It must be too hard for some people to let go of their old-fashioned views. It's the year 2014, time has long passed to let go of prejudices, get with the times. Note to gays: don't move to Texas or move the f out of there!
